Amble Marshalls Walk

Walk Leader: Ian Wardle

Number on walk: 14

Distance: 14.5 miles

Weather: Sunshine!!

We set off following the Amble route past Hollinshead Hall Ruin and on up to the top of Great Hill. This was quite a slog as the path up was extremely muddy. From hear we left the Amble route preferring to stay high by following Spitlers Edge. Again due to all the recent rain it is very wet along this ridge and we passed the spot where someone had to be rescued by Mountain Rescue recently as they had become trapped in the peat just at the side of the flag stoned footpath. This area is now clearly signposted as a danger area. We stopped near the end of the ridge for our morning refreshment stop.

We then dropped down to Rivington Road. We crossed the road to join Belmont Road which we followed up to Rivington Pike where we joined the Amble route again. It was then on to Pike Cottage where we stopped for lunch. Hot drinks were enjoyed from the very popular Pike Snack Shack.

It was then on up to the summit of Winter Hill. As we approached the TV Station mast it was clear that there was work being done, but to our suprise the road past the mast was closed so we had to make a short diversion around the work site.

We then dropped down to the A675 following the route to Belmont, Charlie's Pole and then via the Witton Weavers Way back to the car park. All stiles and bridges crossed were in pretty good condition, so no maintenance work was identified. However, as expected the paths were very wet and waterlogged.

It was so good to be out walking in such good weather with such good views. Great day great company.
