The day’s forecast wasn’t promising with 70 percent chance of rain. Although overcast the weather was kind with no rain and a temperature of 15 degrees. Starting at Burscough Library carpark the walk headed out along the Leeds/Liverpool canal for 1.5 miles before heading towards Martin Mere crossing the railway line. At Martin Mere a quick drinks and comfort break was taken (4.5 miles). From here we headed across open farmland and onto Mere Sands Woods (8 miles) for a lunch stop and further W.C’s. The sun came out for a very short period, much welcomed. However, although plenty of seats and benches, the new café is closed on a Tuesday. From here we finished a lap of the woods with its wildlife, meres and bird hides onto Rufford.
Crossing the A59 with care, we went onto the Rufford branch of the Leeds/Liverpool canal. After a short distance we took a short diversion back to the A49 due to the canal towpath repair works being undertaken. Once back on to the canal it was a straight forward walk down to the Ship public house and locks back to Burscough.
A flat walk of mainly good paths, but muddy in places and a couple of stiles and wooden bridges thrown in. Good for Ornithologists and a chance of short stops at the bird hides and cafes.
