The Walk:-

Walk leader - Dave Taylor.

The weather forecast for the day was appalling, we were getting the tail end of the storm which had deposited a couple of feet of snow on the east coast of America.

That said there were six of us for the start and it did stay fine for twenty minutes or so. Our route was to take us on the Calderdale Way up to Bride Stone Moor. By the time we reached the 'Trig' point, we had heavy rain with a gale force wind blowing straight at us. Stan showed us the 'Bride Stone', which he used to climb and jump off the top of many years ago in his youth.

We then picked up the Todmorden Centenary Way as we headed for 'Gret Rock,' and back onto the 'Calderdale Way' to Heptonstall, where we found shelter in the church porch whilst we had our lunch. The weather by now was improving and for the rest of the walk, we had relatively dry conditions. From Heptonstall we descended to Midgehole and down Hebden Dale into Hebden Bridge.

The effects of the recent flooding were all too obvious, as most of the businesses were closed with water damage apparent. Our route back to Todmorden was to be along the canal, but the damage to the tow path was obvious all the way along, where the river had been so high as to flood the canal and even wash the tow path away completely in places. We managed to stay by the canal all the way back, except for one small section, even though we were squeezing past barriers and scrambling over washed out sections.

We were back at the cars for just after 4.00pm. and I would like to thank the other five who turned up, for what in the end was a most enjoyable day.

 Dave.

Thanks a lot Dave for leading the walk and doing this report.
