Lathom Revisited

Leaders: Noreen and Steve Martin

Number on walk: 24

Distance: 9 miles

Weather: No rain!

A dry day with very slight breeze: forecast to rain at 11am, however, it did not materialise and the walk was completed in the dry. The walk was mainly on good paths with a few stiles and gates, however, there were muddy areas especially on the fields. Twenty four members completed the walk.

First stop was Lathom Chapel were Dorothy Broady Hawkes gave a 1hr talk on the siege of Lathom House 1644 – 1645 followed by light refreshments. We then retraced a short part of the remount War Horse walk before diverting up a slight hill to St James Church and then onto Ruff Wood were we took a lunch break.  It was then downhill along Lady’s Walk to Blyth Hall and onto and through Abbey Farm caravan site. At the rear of the caravan site, through the hedges, the remains of Burscough Priory could be seen along with the training gallops of Blyth Hall a little further on. We then headed back to the cars passing the last remaining building of the remount centre.  We finished the walk at 3.15pm
