Allithwaite Saturday 6th Jan

Walk Leader: Peter Latham

Number on walk 9

Weather: A beautiful cold day with winter sunshine throughout and little wind

Distance: approx. 13 miles

Nine walkers assembled in the car park of the Pheasant Inn Allithwaite on a beautiful winter day. Due to muddy conditions some adaptation of the original route occurred, a track rather than path taking us down to the Humphrey Head circuit. Views over hills and sea from Humphrey Head Point were excellent. After walking round the head we returned to the track to be met by a man looking for helpers to remove a deer from a wire fence. Julie and Martin having had previous experience of deer rescues volunteered joining us later on the walk. (Sadly the deer rescue came too late to save the animal due to substantial leg injuries.)

A lane took us past Flookbrough Airfield and into Flookbrough Village Square passing a new play park. Crossing fields to Boarbank the deer rescue party rejoined us and a morning snack was enjoyed. Next was Wartbarrow, across fields to High Fell Gate leading to the ascent of Hampsfell and a visit to the hospice. Dropping down we stopped among the rocks for lunch then descended via Eggerslack Wood to Grange Promenade. A brisk walk along the promenade took us past Kents Bank Station and up Jack Hill back to the Pheasant Inn where some of the group enjoyed a post walk drink.

Thanks to Peter for leading the walk.
