Pendle, Sunday 12th Feb

The day after the Amble might not have been the best time to put a walk on but 10 of us met at Sabden on a cold and windy morning and set off to climb Pendle Hill. After only a couple of hundred yards it was pointed out that Gareth had left his rucksack behind. We got going again and were soon walking into a strong wind. Ken Beardsworth left us as we reached the main path up to Pendle  and we tirned right, now into a much stronger wind which was getting worse as we progressed.

By the time we got to the narrow path alongside Ogden Clough we were walking in snow and ice as well. We had a very brief stop for coffee before crossing the stream and heading up the snow covered paving stones which lead to the trig point. It was so cold and windy there was no time to hang around looking at the non-existent view (the clag was down as well!), so we commenced our descent to Barley having to take care not to slip on the icy path down.

Leaving Barley via Narrowgates and using a minor road we arrived at Clarion House a bit later than planned but we were all glad to get inside where there was a good fire going and have a sit down with hot drinks and have our dinner. When we left here (this time Stan left his rucksack behind) the snow was coming down quite a bit but fortunately we did have it behind us as we made our way to Newchurch in Pendle and continued along Well Head Road for about a mile before taking the path through fields and a very muddy and mucky descent to Sabden Fold Farm.

Lower Lane was a bit wet, but has been much worse, as we approached Stainscomb and the final couple of miles back to Sabden which were on lanes through Rattan Clough getting back to our cars about 3.10pm.

Thanks to everyone who turned out on what was one of the worst weather days I’ve had in the Pendle area.
