The Walk:-

Walk leader - David Whittaker

Number on walk - 20

Distance - 12 miles

Weather - Generally dry with mist restricting views. Cold start, milder later.

On a dank, overcast day 20 walkers and two dogs set off from the village car park.  Passing the Hark to Bounty Inn which dates from the 16th century, we headed west on the road out of Slaidburn.  After a mile we turned right onto the tarmac drive to Burn Side and remained on the bridleway as it looped its way up the valley of Dunsop Brook, over Dunsop Head and down to the settlement of Whitendale where Ken Beardsworth posed for a photo in front of the antler’s horns.  We went up the side of Whitendale valley where Brian Siddle took an unplanned dive into the stream.  We crossed the expanse of Whitendale Fell and after two miles emerged on to the Hornby Road track which follows the route of the Roman road from Ribchester to the fort at Barrow.  We turned right on to Hornby Road and followed the road back across Croasdale Fell and followed the tarmac road past Higher Wood House and Lanshaw.  Passing the former craft centre at Myttons we emerged beside the health centre at Slaidburn from where after a short distance we returned to our cars.  Quite a pleasant walking day with no rain.

Thanks David for leading the walk, which was enjoyed by all, and for doing this report.
