The Walk:-

Walk leader - John Titterington

Distance - 10.2 miles

Number on walk - 26

Weather - Sunny, fine but quite chilly on the tops. In places very wet underfoot.

The walk started from Dole Lane, Abbey Village. After a short walk down through the village, we cut off to the right down the lane past New Close Farm to the lower Roddlesworth Reservoir. We then took the path alongside the reservoir before cutting up through very wet, soggy fields past Higher and Lower Crow Trees Farms to Tockholes. Once across the road near the Rock Inn we skirted the summit of Winter Hill, then dropped down through Darwen Golf Course to Earnsdale Reservoir. Once across the embankment continued upwards to Darwen Tower, where we had our lunch break.

After lunch, we took paths across Darwen Moor, enjoying and taking in excellent clear views north eastwards to snow covered Ingleborough and northwards to the Lake District Fells. From the edge of the moor at Lyon's Den we then made our way down to Slipper Lowe and onwards down through Tockholes Woods back to our cars in Abbey Village.

To round off the walk in festive style, several of us then retired to the Hare and Hounds where we celebrated our first walk of 2017 in a friendly and sociable way.

Thanks to John for leading a very enjoyable walk and for arranging for such a glorious, sunny winter's day.

Stan.
