Walk from Whins Lane

Walk Leader:- Sue Lomax

Number on walk:- 25 and 4 dogs

Distance:- 10.8 miles

Weather:- Very breezy but dry.

Despite a less than perfect weather forecast there was a very good turnout for the walk.

We set of from Whins Lane to join the towpath by the Leeds Liverpool canal and followed this to Top Lock. Leaving the canal, it was a footpath to Wheelton then up Chapel Lane Heapey to turn down the track past Eagle Farm and on past the fishing lodges to White Coppice.

A short steep climb took us up to the ruins of Coppice Stile Farm (once a pub as well as a farmhouse). Here we felt the full force of the wind as we turned left and followed the sometimes soggy path into Wheelton Plantation. This was our rather draughty lunch spot but there was an assortment of fallen tree trunks to sit on. We continued on through Wheelton Plantation climbing over a few more fallen tree trunks en-route to cross over Well Lane. Then it was another footpath across Brinscall Moor to arrive on Twistmoor Lane.

Turning left we dropped down into Brinscall then followed the track of the disused railway as far as Withnell. It was then field paths up to Bury Lane across to Snapes Heights and down to Withnell Fold. A few more field paths took us back to the canal for a short stretch back to the cars.

A very pleasant walk. Thanks to everyone who came along to keep me company. Photos can be seen 'here'
