Wheelton, Jan 10th

The walk started from the Dressers Arms in Wheelton.

Walk leader Geoff Greenwood.

Distance 11.2 miles.

The day was damp and grey and 25 walkers set off from the pub uphill in an easterly direction.

Shortly after we turned south past South Miry Fold Farm.  From the outset everywhere was very wet.  Rainfall of over ½ inch in the last 48 hours had made the ground waterlogged and muddy.

A climb up the hill took us to St Barnabas Church and then on to Eagle Tower where we were met by Sue Lomax and her husband.

Continuing walking south we passed under the arches of the old abandoned Chorley to Blackburn railway line.  It was here that Geoff gave a potted history of the line.

Passing Phillipse Farm and on to Higher Garstang Farm.  Here we were told of the legend of trains being stored under the ground in the old ROF area during WW2. Passing through Garstang House we followed the track which eventually took us along the Goit and to Brinscall.

A stop for lunch at the Pond and then onwards to Pike Lowe and Cross Fields.

The path took us to Chorley Road and to Ollerton Fold where we examined the “Wailing Cross” in the hamlet. Arriving at the Leeds and Liverpool canal we turned south west past Withnell Fold and then north west to Breworth Fold Farm.

At this point Geoff decided that because of the waterlogged field yet to go across we would complete the walk by road.  Thus we followed the road to Top Lock Pub and onwards to Wheelton and the car park.  Fortunately we were lucky to have missed the rain that was forecast.
