Pen Walk

Walk Leader: Ian Wardle

Number on walk: 17

Distance: 11.5 miles

Weather: Sunshine

We set off heading for High Casterton crossing the Roman Road and on past Brindloss Farm up to the old drovers road.  Along this road Andy Goldsworthy, the English sculptor, created in 1996 sixteen small folds and we visited each and every one today. Each fold is positioned where an old fold once stood (or in one case an old farmers hut), and now contain a large erratic stone taken from the hillside above.

We stopped for a short break on he bridge just above Whelprigg before setting off on our main climb of the day up to the top of Barbon Low Fell. The views from here were so good today. We then dropped down to the road which we followed into Barbon where we stopped for lunch. After lunch we set off through the village to cross Barbon Beck to follow the path across Kirkby Lonsdale golf course coming out at Beckfoot Farm. Again we crossed the beck on a very old bridge to follow the country lane through Low Beckfoot. We left the lane following the path across fields to Gildard Hill and on to the outskirts of Casterton. We followed the path past Casterton Hall and Casterton golf course back to our cars.
