The Walk:-

Walk leader - Chris Seddon.

Number on walk - 10

Distance - 10.5 miles

Weather - Showers to begin with, dry later.

A group of 10 gathered at Mellor village hall on a coolish Autumn morning. Luckily the threatening rain clouds were relatively kind and it was mostly dry from above. Wet fields and dodgy stiles had led to a few last minute route changes to keep those with mud intolerance reasonably happy. The site of the old windmill on Mellor Moor, now long gone but a fine viewpoint. and then the trig point and adjacent site of the Roman observation post and nuclear bunker were visited. Heading downhill several grand properties were passed, including Cockerham Hall and Birley Fold, to eventually emerge on Saccary Lane /Showley Road. Carefully crossing the A59 at Tiggis tracks were  followed, passing Bolton Hall, to reach Copster Green. Sodden fields were avoided by using Lovely Hall Lane and its adjacent path to reach Salesbury. Seats at the cricket club with fine views up and across the valley were appreciated for our lunch break. A loop to the east and back through Ashes Farm allowed further extensive vistas before starting our ascent of Mellor Moor via Clayton Hey Fold and Ramsgreave Hall. A bit of pavement walking followed before the final fields, which were reasonably good underfoot thanks to a kind farmer who had given permission for us to walk away from the dire footpath alternatives. So back to Mellor and our cars.

Thanks to everyone who joined me. The banter and convivial chatter were as important as the route , the views, the beautiful properties and the weather in making the day a success for newcomers and 'old hands' alike.

Chris.
