IN PENDLE's SHADOW

In Pendle’s Shadow. Thursday July 18th.

Although the event says it is 20 miles the actual distance is 18 but it is a beautiful walk with plenty of scenery and a fair bit of ascent.

Five of us set of from Barley and were soon sweating heavily as we climbed Pendle Hill. To our surprise, the trig point had posters of Nelson Mandela pasted on each side so someone must have been up early to celebrate his birthday!

After  descending we continued across Twiston Moor and a steady pull up towards Firber House before descending again to reach the Pendle Way at a delightful spot by the river where we stopped for lunch.

The route continued past Water Meetings, Noggarth  café (unfortunately closed), Sabden Fold where we decided not to do the last steep climb but take a slightly less steep one before arriving at Newchurch – in – Pendle for yet another drink stop and finishing back at Barley at 4.30 pm after completing 17.5miles and around 3000’ of ascent on what was the hottest day of the year.

Thanks  Doreen for an excellent walk.
