Scorton & Grizedale

Walks leaders:        Doreen & Gareth

Number on walk:     15

Distance:                13 miles

Weather:                 Dry all day but very windy in the morning and sunny in the afternoon

Setting out from Scorton picnic site we followed lanes and fields through to Sykes farm continuing onwards, on comparatively dry pasture, to reach the footpath under Harrisend fell. After a brief photo stop at the impressive cairn  we carried on to Lane Head and about 1 mile of minor road to the cattle grid where we started the ascent to Grizedale Head. It is a long but steady climb on a good track but was made harder by the strong headwind which had accompanied us all day.

Lunch over, we crossed the rough moorland to the fence which we then followed over the moor before reaching a cairn where we turned left and took the narrow path to arrive at the summit of Harrisend Fell at 283m. With the wind behind us now, we dropped down to Grizedale Bridge and, with the weather getting warmer and sunnier , we had an afternoon coffee stop. Jumpers and jackets were taken off and we finished the walk back to the cars in glorious, warm sunshine, in fact the warmest it’s been for a long time.

A good walk, good weather and good company.
