13 turned up for this walk but it didn’t bring bad luck as the weather was lovely and provided good views all day.

The first three miles were easy walking, along the remnants of the canal and the fields which bypass Natland. The Helm was the first ascent of the day, a steep, but short haul up the hillside to the trig point which provided some fine views into the lakes and south to Arnside Knott.

We wandered along the ridge, then down to the road and on to Oxenholme Station. Resisting the temptation to get the train to Kendal to rejoin the route, we walked into town, along the river and climbed up to the Golf Course for lunch and enjoy views towards Kentmere & the Howgills.

A short ascent led us to the top of Cunswick Scar before turning south along Scout Scar and Helsington before dropping down to the Sizergh estate and back to the cars where some of us headed straight into the pub to ‘rehydrate’.
