Reindeer's Revenge

Number on Walk: 9

Distance: 13.8 miles

Weather: Lovely winter’s day but windy on the tops

The day started with an award to Jackie for sporting the best set of novelty reindeer antlers (plus a bonus Santa hat). The walk itself started with some easy walking by the river before crossing it and eventually reaching the charming village of Langcliffe. The route turned steeply uphill at this point, before traversing the hillside giving good views of the town and Dales beyond. Another steep ascent followed which eventually led to the top of Warrendale Knotts. There were nice views from here, but it was very windy and not a place to linger, so we descended to shelter and a coffee break. The route then followed the Dales Highway up to the col above Malhamdale where we turned to make the ascent of Rye Loaf Hill. It was windy up here, so after admiring the views, we dropped height to the south and had lunch out the wind behind a wall. The way ahead took us to The Shack, an amateur radio station high up on the fell. There is a resident here (a cat) but she was nowhere to be seen – no doubt asleep inside, so we walked down to the Malham road and followed this to Scaleber Woods. Scaleber waterfall is only 30yards off route here, so we took the opportunity to admire it and, in the process, have a rest. There followed a long easy descent down to the River Ribble where we joined the riverside path which led back to the car park. We’d made good time and the swimming pool café was still open, so was utilised by some of us. Thanks to
everyone who came.
