Sawley, Gisburn, Twiston & Downham

Walk Leaders: Gaynor Wilkinson and John Clarke.

Number of walkers: 14.

Distance: 15 Miles.

Weather: Very hot and sunny.

The walk commenced in the lovely Ribble Valley hamlet of Sawley. It initially made its way north east through farmland located to the south of the river Ribble before dropping down through the very aptly named steep wood onto the banks of a particularly beautiful section of the river. A short stop was made here before continuing alongside the river then back into farmland towards Gisburn. Just before reaching Gisburn village it turned due south across the A59 and made its way to Westby Hall Farm, on passing through the farm stunning views across the rolling farmland of Pendle Hill became available and were appreciated by all.

A short time later lunch was taken in a pretty valley before the walk continued onto the northern edge of Rimmington Village. After leaving the village the walk began the long gradual climb up to Twiston Moor. On reaching the moor wonderful views of virtually the entire Ribble Valley together with the three peaks of North Yorkshire opened up.

The walk then began its descent past Ravens Holme and Clay House into probably the prettiest village in the county Downham where much needed stops at the village ice cream shop and pub were made. With everyone suitably refreshed the walk continued to Ings Beck which was crossed by means of The Fairy Bridge then back across the A59 before the short final stretch through the fields to the rear of Sawley Abbey.

Further refreshments were then taken in the riverside beer garden of the Spread Eagle pub in Sawley.

Despite the high temperatures a thoroughly enjoyable walk through a particularly beautiful and extremely quite part of the region. It was great to see some new members taking part which highlighted the benefit of the Sunday walks program.
