Tockholes

Walk leader:  John Clarke

Number walking:  17

Distance: 11 miles

Weather: Sunshine with light breeze

The walk commenced at 10am from the public car park by the Royal Public house in Tockholes. From leaving the start point the group immediately entered Roddlesworth Woods and followed the path down to the River Roddlesworth itself. Here the Witton Weavers Way was taken in the general direction of Belmont. Weavers Way was followed for a short distance before the group turned off and onto a path which immediately followed alongside the river through to the A675 Belmont Road.

The road was crossed and the group began the long assent to the summit of Great Hill. A water stop was taken at the summit which also provided a great opportunity to fully appreciate the stunning views of virtually the entirety of Lancashire, as well as parts of Merseyside, Manchester, Westmorland and North Wales basking in the summer sunshine.

Upon leaving the summit the group took the path generally towards Winter Hill climbing up and over Redmonds Edge. Upon reaching Sheephouse Lane the group turned left and dropped down the path running through the fields by the side of the road into Belmont village where lunch was taken.

After lunch the group walked through the center of the village to The Belmont Reservoir, the road by the head of the Reservoir was taken and eventually The Witton Weavers Way was rejoined. This was followed back towards Tockholes before the group turned right onto the track leading to the summit of Cartridge Hill.

The hill was climbed and then the path by The Lions Den was taken back to the start point.

A thoroughly enjoyable walk of 11 miles across the West Lancashire Moors in perfect weather conditions which for for most of its duration featured fantastic views of the region.
