2 trigs and a monument May 2nd

Walk leaders:         Doreen & Gareth

Number on walk:    17

Distance:              10.2 miles

Weather:              Dry but cloudy

We did what was set out in the programme, first of all visiting Compston's Cross, erected in 1902 and near to the site of two ancient crosses ( no longer there) which were on the pilgrim's route to Whalley. A stretch of Pennine Bridleway was picked up and after a short road section we arrived at the Deerplay war memorial where we had a short coffee break before continuing through pastures to reach our first trig point, Broadclough. After descending quite steeply to the main road we crossed a footbridge and, after a brief climb, had our lunch stop. We then walked along a section of the Irwell Sculpture Trail (although none were to be seen) before reaching Weir and beginning the long but steady ascent to Thieveley Pike. A couple of miles later we arrived back at the car park at 2.50pm after a good day out. Gareth did a sterling job as backmarker making sure no one got left behind.
