Coniston Moor & New Pasture Edge

Walk Leader: Ian Wardle

Number on the walk: 10

Distance: 15.5 miles

Weather: No rain but cloudy and cold

We set off from Grassington following the Dales Way north. On reaching Scot Gate Lane we turned east following Conistone Turf Road up to our first trigpoint of the day, Conistone Moor, at Capplestone Gate. We stopped here for a deserved coffee break. We then continued east skirting the edge of Conistone Moor dropping down into Mossdale. We passed Mossdale Scar before turning left heading south across all the old mine workings. On reaching Coalgrove Beck we stopped at some old mine workings ruins for lunch where there was shelter from the wind.  After lunch we set off to join Old Moor Lane track which was followed until we reached a gate on the right giving us access onto the moor. There is no clear track from here, so we followed the wall for a short while before making a line for the New Pasture Edge trigpoint. It was now time for another group photo as the sky had cleared a little.

We then dropped down to Yarnbury where we crossed Moor Lane following the track east to Hebden Beck. We followed the beck for a short while before joining Tinker's Lane which we followed around the radio mast before dropping down to Grassington.

We all had a great day and it was good to have Caroline from West Lancashire Ramblers join us who hopefully we will see on some of our future walks.
