A Wuthering Hike

Walk Leaders:            Ken & Jenny Wyles

Number on Walk:        8

Distance:                     14 miles

Weather:                     Mainly dry, bit of drizzle, occasionally windy

This was a 14 mile jaunt around Bronte country, starting at the large free car park on Penistone Hill, west of Haworth. There was a gentle start with an easy downhill to Leeshaw reservoir which was followed by a stiff climb to join the ‘conduit track’ at the side of Oxenhope Moor. This provided an easy 2 miles contouring the hill with views across to Keighley and Sharp Haw in the distance.

We then climbed onto Nab Hill with the intention of finding the Stanza Stone (a stone with a poem carved into it). Sadly, due to bad luck and bad leadership we couldn’t find it so gave up and headed across country to reach the town of Denholme and from there onto Denholme Edge. It was windy at that point, but we managed to find a bit of shelter on the side of the hill to have lunch.

The route carried on across moorland and dropped steeply downhill to Oxenhope Station where we joined the Railway Children Walk (this is the railway line they used in the film), This took us along by the river and into Haworth. We climbed the cobbled main street up to the parish church and parsonage, of Bronte sisters fame. A walk through the churchyard led to an enclosed path which ended on the east side of Penistone Hill and a short walk back to the car park.

A very pleasant day out with good company. Thanks to all who came.
