A View of Nelson

Walk Leader: Ian Wardle

Distance: 13 miles

Weather: Sunny

We set off from Quarry Hill passing through Scholefield Farm on our way to our first trig point, Marsden Heights, where we took a group photo. It was then across to join the Pendle Way which we followed for a short while, crossing Nelson Golf course, before dropping down to Briercliffe Allotments where we joined the Burnley Way. We followed the BW through Cockden to Happa the excellent café at the Shore’s Hey Farm Equine Sanctuary where we stopped for a very enjoyable coffee and cakes break which was enjoyed by all.  We then pushed on to join the Pendle Way at Upper Coldwell Reservoir which we followed for a short while before joining the Pennine Bridle Way where we stopped for lunch looking up to Lad Law. We then set off passing through Oaken Bank, Little Moss Farm and Doughty Farm on our way to our primary objective of the day which was to visit the 27ft high Walton’s Monument which stands next to Shelfield Farm trig point. Both the monument and trig point are on private farmland with no public access, so permission was sought from the landowner.

We then followed the road to join Crawshaw Lane which was blocked at one point by a dumped sliced-up car which we had to carefully climb through!

We then joined the Pendle way again which was followed back to Nelson.

A good day, weather and banter was excellent.
