A Whitbarrow Walk

Walk Leader: Ian France

Number on walk: 14

Distance: 10 miles

Weather: After a few days of extreme heat the weather today was just right

Karen and I arrived at 9:35 and I was suprised and pleased to see a large turn out, there were 14 in the group.

The names and numbers were collected and then we were off at 10am on the dot. Id recce'd the walk a few weeks previously and expected the initial part of the walk through Witherslack nature reserve to be over grown, with plenty of brambles, so had taken some secateurs. Fortunately someone had already been through clearing the route.

The walk through Witherslack was on a good path through trees, and it helped to keep the sun off and kept us cool.

The trees cleared at Yewbarrow. A lovely little top which shares the name, if not the height , of the mountain above Wastwater
From this Yewbarrow we had our first view of the Lake District. We stopped for a drink and the group photo.

From Yewbarrow we decended back into the tree cover and only emerged again after the one big climb of the day, up the side of Whitbarrow by a scree slope.

At the top it was lovely day and we sat on the Summit having lunch, Enjoying the 360degree views. A few of us tried to guess the names of the tops we could see.

From the Summit we followed the "That's Lyth" route for a short while before heading down a slope heading towards the Lyth Valley

We followed a route back below the cliffs of Whitbarrow, through and old quary and arrived back at about 2:30. Giving plenty of time for a group drink at the Derby Arms pub.

The promised rain wasnt much, but we had long left the beer garden when it arrived.
