Shard Bridge 19th April

Walk Leader: Andy Webster

Number on walk: 5 walkers and 3 dogs

Distance: 17 miles

Weather: Perfect walking weather

We met at the Shard Bridge Hotel, 5 walkers and 3 dogs on what promised to be very nice day.

After crossing Shard Bridge we turned right to follow the south bank of the river Wyre, the first mile or so was extremely muddy. The route follows the Wyre way through Stannah, past the old ICI chemical works, through Rossall school on to the sea front. We walked along the sea front into Fleetwood were we had lunch whilst waiting for the ferry to take us across the mouth of the Wyre to Knott End.

The route then turns south and follows the  north bank of the Wyre, through Knott End golf course towards Hambleton via fields and sea defence embankments. From Hambleton we diverted from the original route to avoid an extremely muddy last few miles, we turned inland across fields back to the Shard Bridge Hotel, this diversion probably added an extra mile to the walk, but was a far better route.

A great day's walking in perfect weather and excellent views across Morecombe Bay and also of the Bowland fells.
