Scout Scar

Walk Leaders:      Ken & Jenny Wyles

Number on Walk: 18

Distance:               12 miles

Weather:               Sunny in the morning, turning cloudy

This walk started at the Strickland Arms, just outside the entrance to Sizergh Castle. The route took us through the castle grounds, up to Helsington Church and then onto Scout Scar. This involved a bit of climbing but we rewarded with decent views of the Coniston & Langdale fells.

We went half way along the scar before turning down towards Kendal, over the old Kendal racecourse then descending steeply to eventually reach the River Kent where we stopped for lunch. The weather was lovely by this point, sunny and not a breath of wind. After lunch there was a flat easy section following the river, the remnants of the old canal and the avenue of trees through Levens deer park where the deer obliged with a close sighting. The weather got cloudy and more ominous as we walked through Levens village and it finally, disappointingly, rained less than a mile from home.

However, the rain had stopped by the time we got back to the pub where a lot of people decided to go in and ‘rehydrate’. Thanks to all who came.
