Rivington 14th December

Walk Leader: John Clarke

Number walking: 20

Distance: 10.5 Miles

Time: 5 hrs 20 minutes

Walk start and finish point Great House Barn, Rivington Lane, Rivington.

The first section of the walk was through Lever Park by the side of Rivington Lower Reservoir through to Rivington Castle where a short stop was made for input about the history of the castle and Lever Park.

The next section was through the park to Rivington and Blackrod High School where the group picked up the lane at the rear of the school and made its way up to the Rivington Gardens. A short tour of the gardens took place with further input about the history of the gardens and its creator Lord Leverhulme.

The group then left the gardens and climbed up to Rivington Pike which again featured a short stop for input about the history of the site and the current tower.

Despite the very heavy mist and fog completely covering the fell the group successfully navigated its way to the masts on Winter Hill and down onto the path to Sheephouse Lane, where as the mist and fog cleared they were rewarded with some stunning reverse inversion views of the area stretching right across The Lancashire Plain out to sea in the Mersey estuary.

Lunch was taken here.

The group then crossed Sheephouse Lane, passed the source of The River Yarrow, then picked up the track from Redmonds Edge to Lead Mine Valley.

From the Valley the group passed The Yarrow Reservoir then made its way back into Rivington Village and a return to the start point.
