A walk over the limestone tops of Hutton Roof and Farleton Knott with amazing panoramic views, including Morecambe Bay, The Lake District, The Howgills and Ingleborough. Various routes are available across these fells. We followed the main paths whenever possible, although the route is not always obvious and a compass is advisable.

The walk started from Plain Quarry car park, off Dalton Lane (Burton-in-Kendal). Leave the car park from the west side through the kissing gate and follow the path up to the trig point at 274m (SW summit) on Hutton Roof Crags. After pausing to admire the views, we continued in a north westerly direction, meandering through the scrub surrounding the limestone pavement, finally descending to the lane which runs between Clawthorpe Hall and Hutton Roof village. Crossing the lane we walked uphill through the field to Farleton’s limestone pavement heading towards the summit at 265m, where lunch was taken.

After lunch, we had a brief exploration of the Farleton fell plateau, enjoying the spectacular views, before making our return journey along the north eastern shelf of the fell; crossing the road back onto Hutton Roof crags. We then made a steady climb through the gorse and then down into Hutton Roof village. Walking through the village in a southwards direction, we then took the signposted route to the right through some houses, joining a track. Keeping the fell on our right, we walked through the fields as far as Crag House where we joined Dalton Lane, turning right and following the road to return to our start point.
