Warton Wonderland, Tuesday 19th November 2019

Walk Leader: Ken Wyles

No on Walk:   21

Distance:       12 miles

Weather:       Cold and dry

A sharp frost overnight meant a very cold start at Warton Crag Quarry car park. However, we quickly warmed up after we, almost immediately, had a steep climb up to the escarpment path. Luckily, the effort was worth it as it afforded good views of the coast and down into Lancashire.

We made our way off the crag, dodging some icy limestone as we went and headed round to Leighton Hall and on through the RSPB reserve at Leighton Moss which was surprisingly busy with bird watchers. We continued, dodging golf balls on Silverdale Golf Course, before arriving at the Pepper Pot viewpoint for lunch.

The view was lovely, but it was a chilly spot to stop. The walk continued down to the cove at Silverdale before heading to Crag Foot. An attempt on the summit of Warton Crag provided a minor ‘sting in the tail’, but everyone was up to the challenge and we did get a view from the top. A steep, but not unpleasant, descent led us back to the start.

Thanks to all who attended. It was nice to get out on such a lovely winter’s day.
