Bullpot and Barbon Round

Nine walkers assembled on the medieval bridge in Kirkby Lonsdale otherwise known as Devil’s Bridge above the river Lune which was flowing well after recent rain. Jane spotted a kingfisher on a rock in the river which then flew allowing others to enjoy the majestic blue against the water. We made our way to High Casterton via Bindles Farm to the edge of the fells as low cloud lifted, negotiating a few damp areas! Keeping on lower ground a track was taken to Fell Road and the climb to Brownthwaite where we enjoyed a morning break looking at the autumn colours on the fells nearby and coast in the distance.

From here we dropped down onto a track that lead back to Fell road and onto a newly painted Bullpot Farm (a base previously used for the Barbondale Round Challenge).  The track from Bullpot was damp but easily negotiated to the road into Barbon which had to be taken as the route via Blindbeck Bridge along the river in Barbondale continues to be closed for woodland maintenance. Joining the planned route via by the church we enjoyed lunch in the autumn sunshine at the edge of the Barbondale estate.

Skirting the edge of the village we arrived at Barbon Golf course. A mixture of muddy paths and fields lead towards Casterton and the edge of Casterton School grounds (now part of Sedbergh School) where in 1833 four of the Bronte sisters had been educated. Return to Devil’s Bridge was via Casterton Hall, the Golf course and to the river Lune via the caravan park as we had started.

Thankyou everyone for joining me, I think we all enjoyed a quiet autumnal walk in some wonderful British countryside and an area hopefully ready for further exploration.
