Sizergh, July 2nd

Walk Leader:        John Clarke

No on walk:           24

Distance:              12 miles

Weather:              Excellent with sunshine most of the day

The walk commenced and finished at Sizergh Castle. 26 LDWA members attended, with 2 led by Stan Bradshaw opting for a shorter version of the walk, though they did complete the initial section with the main group.

The route took us from the car park north up to and through Holaslack Farm where much entertainment was provided by the large flock of Lambs that were being moved through the farm yard. Then it was onto the ridge above Brigsteer which afforded some wonderful views of the central Lakeland peaks and the Lyth Valley.

We then turned due east and worked our way past Prizet Hall to the River Kent at Natland. We skirted around the edge of the village eventually joining Helm Lane which led us to the foot of The Helm (Trig point height 185 Meters) A steady climb to the summit afforded a full 360 degrees of stunning views to accompany lunch.

Post lunch we retraced our steps along Helm Lane but then continued into Natland village centre where a vital ice cream stop was made at the village post office.

From the village we joined the path alongside the disused section of the Lancaster Canal and made our way south through Sedgwick to Levens deer park. The path running through both sections of the park was completed which eventually brought us back to the lane leading back to the castle.
