Barton, Dec 18th

Leader: Sue Fagg

Number on walk: 21 and 3 dogs

Weather: Overcast, breezy with some light rain

Length: 10 miles

The walk was well attended despite a poor forecast of heavy rain which fortunately waited until later in the day.

Starting walking south through some of Barton village passing the now derelict Boars Head we crossed the A6 and made our way to Hankinson Bridge. The canal tow path was followed until it was time to cut across to Myerscough College and explore the Plant Centre with indoor Temperate and Tropical Houses. Some attractive flowers were out as well as seasonal decorations. After a short break with festive shortbread, we wandered through the gardens managed by students; a return in spring and summer would show the garden in full glory.

A track from the college was taken returning us to the canal and the colourful festive trees of Barton Grange were seen before we left the canal crossing the A6 and railway line to enjoy lunch in the Bilsborrow millennium picnic area. From Matshead we headed south across muddy fields to Bilsborrow Hall Farm then through more fields to Jack Nook Farm where one member of the group needed a little help to release a boot from a very muddy patch.

As light rain started we returned via quiet roads and muddy fields to the car park for 2.15 allowing time to continue festive preparations! A gentle (despite some poor stiles) enjoyable walk allowing fresh air on a wintry day, with all in good spirits despite very grey skies.
