Walk Report 13th November 2018

No of walkers: 19

Weather: Bright but with some threatening clouds

Distance: 10.2 miles (average of the 2 GPS readings I was given)

Having re-arranged the start point to accommodate a good lunch spot, we met in a residential street in Aspull outside a nursery. The initial part of the walk went along quiet roads and pathways before leaving the built up area and headed up a gentle hill with good views towards Winter Hill. After passing Toddington Farm and dropping down again we passed Freezeland Farm and crossed the only muddy fields on the walk. We then went via Little Scotland and Aberdeen Farm to access a disused railway which we followed to the outskirts of Adlington. Another couple of kilometres and we arrived at Worthington Lakes where we sat on the bank in the sunshine for lunch.

The path then meandered along the lakeside to the dam wall where we had to take a brief road section and negotiate a modern estate before a short climb up to the canal. Access to this was not clearly signed but luckily on my first reccy I had approached it from above where it was clear. We followed the canal for about a mile – I had seen kingfishers here previously but none put in an appearance on this occasion. After leaving the canal we climbed Sennicar Lane and proceeded to the main Haigh Hall car park and some very welcome toilet facilities. We then strolled through the country park, very quiet on a weekday, before taking a path along the edge of Holly Nook and back to the cars about 2.15 pm
