Lostock Hall, Sept 11th

Walk Leader:         Greg Hickey

Distance:               10 miles

Number on walk:    13

Weather:               Dry

Thirteen members and three dogs gathered at my house on Todd Lane for a 10am start.

We headed off down the disused East Lancs railway - formerly the site of Todd Lane station before Mr Beeching swung the axe in 1966. The weather was dry after a wet start to the day and remained so throughout the walk. Continuing down the tree-lined tramway we crossed the old tram bridge and turned North with Preston town parks to our right and the rising tide of the Ribble to our left. We crossed the river again using the old Penwortham bridge which is Grade 2 listed and was built in 1759. This bridge replaced the first bridge built in 1755 which had collapsed in 1756! Continuing in a westerly direction towards the Ribble estuary we passed the site of the former Preston power station and took lunch on the river bank below Howick. The river at this point was at maximum height after there being a neap (spring) tide at Blackpool coupled with there being heavy rain the previous two days.

After lunch we made our way up to Howick Cross through some urban areas of Penwortham, crossing Cop Lane and back down to the south side of the River Ribble
until we reached the disused East Lancs railway yet again, passing the now derelict Vernon Carus cotton mill whose products included the majority of bandages used in the first and second world wars.
We then made our way back to Todd Lane for refreshments.

Added to this, the last time I did this walk Stan added some interesting and informative information to my report which was kindly received. Thanks Stan. You can access this in archive Tuesday 31st January 2017.

Many thanks also to Adrian for taking the photographs. photos can be seen 'here'
