Hornby, July10th

Walk Leader:         Jaqui Peakes

No on walk:            7

Distance:               11.5 miles

Weather:               Cloudy but warm in the morning, hot and sunny in the afternoon

From the car park we crossed Hornby Bridge and followed flat land along the River Wenning until it joined the River Lune.  This took us passed Loyn Bridge across open ground to reach the village of Melling.  Here we left flat ground to cross undulating fields to Wrayton with its Hall and attractive old houses.  By lunchtime it was very hot so lunch was under the shade of a large oak tree.  We turned south to the village of Wennington passing Wennington Hall School which is the birthplace of Sir Peter Hesketh Fleetwood, the founder of the town of Fleetwood. Continuing south passed Overends and Mealbank to Wray where we had an afternoon break in the Flood Garden on Main Street.  A plaque records the flash flood of 8th August 1967 when the River Roeburn rose 20ft in 20mins. and swept away the houses. From Wray we had an easy walk back to Hornby.

Seven of us braved what was forecast as another very hot day but the breeze and slight cloud cover kept the temperature down.  Still a day for suncream, hats and water (and fly repellent).  The day gave us great company and fantastic views over the surrounding countryside and out to the Yorkshire 3 Peaks but will probably be remembered for the number of inquisitive and lively cows (herds of them) we met long the way.  I don't like cows!!  Oops!!
