Sedbergh 19 June 18

Walk leader:- Chris Seddon

Distance:- 14.3 miles

Number on walk:- 15

Weather:- Perfect hill walking day

15 people met at New Bridge, Sedbergh ready to explore what for many was a new area, the glorious Howgill Fells. The weather was kind, a mix of sun and cloud but not too hot. Clear views were enjoyed in all directions. An easy start took us via Millthrop to Farfield Mill and Straight Bridge. The path up the west side of the Rawthey valley was followed to our morning stop at Cautley Beck footbridge from where there was a good view of Cautley Spout and our somewhat challenging route up into the hills. The lonely valleys of Red Gill and Force Gill took us via the Andy Goldsworthy sheepfold to the main ridge path and The Calf. Lunch, with glorious views to the east, was enjoyed out of the wind below the ridge. Our return route visited Calders, Arant Haw and the edge of Craggstone Wood before passing through Sedbergh school grounds and having a look at the Pepperpot. As we looked up to the fells from our cars the mist was starting to shroud them and we realised how kind the weather had been! 14.3 miles and 3200' which I hope everyone really had enjoyed as much as they said - there was even mention of other walks in the area!! Thanks for joining me and for your company.
