The Walk:-

Walk leader - John Crook

Distance - 10.2 miles

Number on walk - 19

Weather - Brightened during the morning to give a nice day. Very wet underfoot.

The morning was cloudy and overcast as 19 walkers and 2 dogs set off over a very wet moor to the summit of Great Hill. As we reached the summit the skies cleared and we had good views all round. We then began the long descent to White Coppice, passing Drinkwaters farm, where we noticed that a stone bench and a headstone had been erected, near Joe's cup,  in memory of Joe Witter a local fell runner from Wigan Harriers.  Just before we reached White Coppice we passed Coppice Stile House where Stan told us the tale of the farmer who lived there, secretly providing locals with beer as it was a temperance area. We then followed the goyt along to Brinscall where we had lunch at the side of the lake. The ducks had lunch as well, thanks to Jean providing them with bread.

After lunch we followed the footpath of the old Chorley to Blackburn railway to Abbey village. From the Hare & Hounds we went along the side of Rake Brook reservoir to follow the path passing the Lower & Upper Roddlesworth reservoirs and along to Halliwell Bridge. Then began a steady climb up to Slipper Lowe and on to Hollingshead Hall where Stan showed some of the group the building with the wishing well inside.  From there it was a short walk to the cars arriving back at 2.30pm after a walk of 10.2 miles.

Many thanks to all who came on my walk and hopefully enjoyed it and to Stan for helping out with information some of which I had never heard before.
