Ball Grove, Sept 5th

Despite all the overnight rain and the mornings downpours 9 people arrived at Ball Grove for the start of this re-scheduled Tuesday walk. We set off on the Ferndean Way to reach Laneshaw Bridge where we took shelter in a bus stop while we waited for another torrential shower to abate to just heavy rain.

Now following the Pendle Way we made our way through fields to the trig point on Knarr Hill before descending to the road just south of Cowling. Here we continued on, with Ken happily splashing through every puddle he could find, to meet the Pennine Way which climbed steadily over a very wet Ickornshaw Moor before eventually dropping down to the Haworth road. Given the conditions we were in, a joint decision was made to use the road for a short time before once again turning left on to the Bronte Way.

Crossing Wycoller Beck, we walked past Foster’s Leap farm to the Atom Panoptican then again dropping down to the visitor centre at Wycoller where we had a short break  before taking cover under the trees as yet another very heavy downpour arrived. Ken wasn’t fazed though as he just sat at a table answering a phone call.

The final three miles were through fields and bridleways to reach the lovely village of Winewall which we walked through, to arrive back at our cars just after 3pm with the rain having stopped at last.  Doreen
