Sue's Walk Saturday 15th July

Wyre way and the Trough of Bowland

Walk Leader: Sue Taylor

Distance: 25 miles

Weather: Rain for most of the day

Being my first time for leading a walk I was pleased to see 7 willing guinea pigs in the Scorton picnic site car park all ready to go at 8:45am. We were joined by a couple all the way from Dorset who had stayed the night in the car park in their campervan and had an amazing 37 'hundred milers' between them!!!

We set off along the Wyre Way in light drizzle and had a scenic break by the beautiful smooth curve of Abbeystead Weir after 5 miles. We continued past Abbeystead house and over to Tarnbrook and onto the Trough road where we left the Wyre Way. The rain gathered momentum as we covered the 2.5 mile road section over the Trough of Bowland, passed by the occasional car and bike. We turned off the road at Langden intake where the ice cream van was sadly absent. Now thoroughly wet we passed Langden 'Castle' (actually a smelly barn) and pressed on up the narrow precipitous path to Fiendsdale Head. On a wing and a prayer we safely navigated over wet misty moorland with only a vague path and hit the shooting track down to Oakenclough. At last the rain cleared and we got some views to the Fylde Coast and Blackpool Tower.

We made our way over the last small hill before dropping down into Scorton where sadly we missed the closing time of the local ice-cream emporium. Not that it had been ice-cream weather. We made it back at 6:40pm and dead on 25 miles. To see photos please click here.

Thanks to everyone who came for a great day out. Sue
