Kinder, May 13th

After a week of good sunshine it was a bit of a disappointment that the weather didn't want to play ball for this extra walk in the group's programme. However, the four of us set off, undeterred by the cool wind and after crossing the event field being set up for the May Queen festivities soon warmed up on the steep climb to the top of Lantern Pike, the first of our five tops in today's walk. We descended gradually from here and after crossing the A624 commenced the long haul up to the summit of Mill Hill stopping for coffee at the site of an old aircraft crash which was the only place with a bit of shelter from the wind.

Reaching the crossroads between Mill Hill, Kinder, Hayfield and the Snake Pass we looked at our next objective - the pull up to the Kinder plateau. This appears to be pretty fearsome but it really isn't as bad as it looks. Soon we were walking along the edge of the plateau on the Pennine Way making our way to Kinder Downfall. Somewhere along here Gareth had trouble with his hat and Glenn tried valiantly to fix it but to no avail. Luckily for Gareth, Peter had a spare hat albeit a Burnley Supporters one so for the rest of the walk Burnley had one more fan! The downfall had hardly any water in it so it was easy to get across and we continued along for another twenty minutes before having our lunch in the shelter of some rocks.

The afternoon saw us passing Kinder Low and then following the mostly made up path for a couple of miles to reach South Head, our fourth top of the day. Although only a short climb it is a real little stinker! The fifth and final climb was a bit more gradual, following a pleasant ridge path, to the top of Mount Famine. Easy tracks now took us to Hayfield campsite and we finished the walk following the River Sett back to the cars.
