Bentham, May 6th

Jaqui looking to Ingleborough                                                                                                           Ready to go!

Six members set out from High Bentham and after saying good morning to the local llama we walked along the charming River Wenning to Low Bentham.  We made our way south across lovely dry fields via Kirkbeck to Maiden Bridge and eventually to the small church at Mill Bridge.  Here we sat in the sunshine and enjoyed our morning break.

After Lowgill we changed direction and walked through beautiful bluebell woods to Lower Houses.  At Over Houses we took advantage of the "walkers" seats set in the walls to enjoy the wide reaching views over Bentham and Ingleton towards the Yorkshire Three Peaks.  We stayed on the higher ground to enjoy the open views and then dropped down to Botton Head where a short section of quiet lane ,at the edge of the open access land, brought us to Whitray.  We found a sheltered dip to enjoy lunch out of the cool easterly wind.  A quiet spot with just the song of the cuckoo and the wind in the trees.

The afternoon took us across Tatham Fells to the Great Stone of Fourstones.  Sue and Peter climbed the carved steps but the saner souls admired the fabulous views from ground level.  Before us the views spread from  Fountains Fell, the Three Peaks, Gregareth and out to the Furness and Lakeland Fells.  Thank goodness for fine weather.  We then dropped down across dry moor and fields to Mill Dam and a pleasant path along the edge of the River Wenning to High Bentham.

A good day.  A little windy but dry and bright so we could enjoy the peace of this very quiet area.

Thanks to Jaqui for leading this walk in a very little walked area and for writing this report - we all know now where we went, it was like a magical mystery tour!
