North Turton Trail Oct 22nd

North Turton Trail    Oct. 22nd

On a bright but chilly morning 10 walkers and 2 dogs set off from Crookfield car park along the track to Catherine Edge and over the moor, above Belmont and Delph reservoirs, to cross the A666 Bolton – Blackburn Road. We then climbed to the top of Turton Heights and had a coffee stop before we got to the access road to Clough House Farm. Passing Turton Towers we went down to the Jumbles reservoir and followed Bradshaw Brook to Turton Bottoms along Birches Road and past a very old packhorse bridge, up through Barlow woods to stop at the bowling green at Barlow Institute, Edgworth for a pleasant lunch stop.

After lunch the sun had got warmer as we made our way along the path by the Wayoh reservoir and on to the Strawbury Duck pub. Following Edge Lane we came down to the Entwistle reservoir and went along the path to the heron sculpture were we had a short afternoon break.

The last leg of the walk took us up to the Fairy Battery where the Unitarian congregation held services before their chapel was built in 1713. Re-crossing the A666 we walked up Green Low clough past the ruins of Lions Den and down to the cars finishing at 4pm.

Thanks to those who came on my walk and I am sure everyone enjoyed the day, the weather being ideal for walking.
