Salesbury Hall ,Sat Sept 23rd

Just 5 walkers came to find out what the 3R's walk was all about. After a few guesses, I had to tell them it was about the 3 rivers we would cross during the walk, the Ribble, the Hodder and the Calder.

The day was overcast, but stayed dry throughout, so that was a bonus. We crossed the Ribble at Ribchester Bridge and as we walked through Haugh Wood, I spotted a vole running along the path for 6 or 7 feet before disappearing into the undergrowth. The morning break was taken on the outskirts of Hurst Green where we could see Darwen Tower on the skyline.

A few miles further found us alongside the Hodder where we had lunch near to the bath house used by the students of Stonyhurst College many years ago. We crossed the Hodder at Lower Hodder Bridge and followed the road through Great Mitton before turning right to pass what used to be Calderstones Hospital, now a housing estate.Soon we arrived at Whalley Viaduct where we crossed the 3rd river, the Calder.

After a short afternoon break above Hacking Hall, we revisited the Ribble but on the other bank before leaving it to arrive back at the car park.It was good to see a couple of relatively new members. Let's hope they continue to come on walks and maybe lead some in the future.

Thanks to all who supported the walk and to Doreen for the photos.
