Chatburn, Sept 1st

This walk was basically one of the Mid-Week Kanters which the group organised as events for several years. Seven of us left Chatburn on a good sunny morning following the River Ribble to West Bradford where we continued upwards passing Eaves Hall Country Club before making our way over the moor to the ruined Fellside farm where we had a short break. Alas, the funny face on one of the inside walls, and which was one of the clues on the Kanter, is now unrecognisable with not much left of it.

Continuing now, we walked over Easington Fell before descending to the dog kennels at another Fellside farm, passing Skelshaw and Manor House, to eventually follow the River Hodder into Slaidburn for our lunch stop. In the afternoon we passed Broadhead Farm and carried on up the broad valley through the various Harrops to reach Harrop Fold for our afteroon stop. ( The footpath (?) at Harrop Lodge is still a jungle of nettles, weeds and all sorts of rubbish to negotiate - it never gets any better!). The final 5 miles took us uphill past Swan Barn onto Grindleton Fell then contouring round Simpshey Hill before the final descent to Grindleton and the finish along the River Ribble before the short climb back to our cars. It was a very good day enjoyed by all who came.
