Tuesday Aug 30th, Bottom Barn

Rivington Bottom Barn        Tuesday 30th August

Walk Leader  John Crook

Twenty one walkers and one dog set off on a lovely sunny morning, making our way past Rivington village school and Bowling club, along the track to Parsons Bullough Road and then started to climb through Lead Mines Clough and on past the ruins of Simms Farm.

We then continued on the track to the ruins of Higher and Lower Hempshaws Farms, up the moor to Will Nar and Hordern Stoops car park. There we had a look at the ancient Rivington and Belmont boundary stone that is set in the wall corner. Then came the long slog up Winter Hill where we had our lunchtime stop at the memorial plaque to the Manx air crash in 1958.

After lunch we made our way down the service road for the television mast, then on to the Two Lads cairn which was erected in memory of two Horwich boys who got lost on the moor and died of hypothermia during a snowstorm. Our walk then took us down past the side of Wilderswood and then down to Lever Park Avenue past Ormstons Farm.

The final section of the walk took us around the back of Liverpool Castle, built by Lord Lever as a folly, and on along the shores of the Lower Rivington reservoir to arrive back at our cars at 2.20 pm
