The Walk:-

Walk Leader - Mac Calvert.

After a few days of wet weather, enough to cause local flooding, the promise of a walk on a warm sunny day obviously appealed to many of our members, as seemingly car after car gradually filled the little car park, below Holcombe Village, from which we were to start our walk. By the time Mac led the way, across the road and up towards Peel Tower (more often referred to as Holcombe Tower) there were 21 of us, a good number for a Tuesday 10 mile mile walk.

The route he chose took us steeply up to the Tower, then in a pleasant breeze across the moor, over Harcles Hill, past Pilgrim's Cross to Bull Hill. A pleasant descent followed, passing Ellen Strange's memorial stone and Robin Hood's Well (that guy got everwhere) on our way down into Helmshore. Here we turned abruptly uphill once more, passing through Tor End Farm as we climbed up onto Tor Hill for our lunch break.

After lunch we did a circuit of what's referred to locally as Tor Flat, where we joined the Rossendale Way, which we followed for a short distance to what after WW2 was known as the Great House Experimental Husbandry Farm. From there and still on the RW, we contoured round the Alden Valley, then after a short break to let the sweat dry off a little, followed it down as far as a bridlepath above the village of Strongstry. Here we left the RW and followed the bridlepath all the way to Holcombe Village, where a short descent led us to our cars.

Thanks Mac for conjouring up such a lovely summer's day and for leading a walk enjoyed by all.

Stan.
