Seven walkers met at Settle station for the short train ride to Horton-in-Ribblesdale. Arriving there just after 10am, we set off up the track to Sell Gill holes, under grey skies. A short distance past the pothole entrances, we took the (newish) 3 Peaks path across Sell Gill Hill, Sell Gill beck and Whitber Hill, to reach the track junction near Hull Pot. From there, it was a steep pull up to Pen-y-Ghent's top, where we had a viewless coffee break and the weather closed in some more. Waterproofs were on and hoods were up. We now left the summit via the Pennine Way, carefully negotiating the steep and slippery path down to Churn Milk Hole. An easy track then led to a sheltered tarmac section NE along Silverdale, before the climb up onto Fountains Fell. Hoods were taken down as the weather (briefly) improved, and, after hearing from a descending walker that it was "very windy" on top, an early lunch was taken in the lee of boulders by In Sleets beck. This was a good decision, as the wind was accompanied by heavy bursts of rain as we crested the rise and hoods were put up once more. The track then led easily to Tennant Gill Farm, where, in the face of worsening weather, we decided to cut about 3 miles off the planned route, and, instead of walking around Malham Tarn, took the bridleway across Malham Moor to Henside, where we enjoyed an easy 4km on tarmac before picking up the Pennine Bridleway above Langcliffe, which we followed to Settle, finishing at 5pm. A wet and wild walk but one in excellent company; thanks to all.
