The Walk:-

Walk leader - Stan Bradshaw

This was a 10 mile walk in the mainly upland areas round the Grane and Musbury Valleys, on a perfect sunny summer's day. 

Starting from the Grane Vistor Centre, our route joined the Rossendale Way on Foe Edge and followed it for a mile or so, to where the farm of Pike Low Dole once stood. Here we left the RW to head upwards past the old quarries of Boardman Close and across bleak moorland to Hog Lowe Pike, where we took time for a short break for pictures by the trig point. More moorland followed as we continued our walk to Causeway End, re-joining the RW just below. Still on the RW we made our way round the head of Musbury Valley and onwards to the prominent rock on Musbury Tor. It was here we had our lunch stop, with good views looking out over Haslingden and the Rossendale Valley.

Lunch break over we had a steep descent into Musbury Valley, followed by a climb up the other side and another descent, to gain the Grane Valley once again by Holden Wood Reservoir. The walk back up the valley was first of all on the North side, passing Mary's Seat and through Leys End Farm, then on the South side above Ogden Reservoir, round the head of Calf Hey Reservoir to the remains of the old Grane Village and finally up through woodland to our cars. How different this must all have looked before the reservoirs were built, when all the farms were still in use and the Grane Village was a thriving little community, complete with a church, chapel, school and pub. 

Hopefully all in our group of 12 enjoyed the walk. Certainly the weather couldn't have been better, in spite of being a bit on the warm side at times.
