The Walk:-

Walk leader - Stan Bradshaw

Our walk today was in and around the attractive Yorkshire Dales valley of Wharfedale, on a day which promised to be cool for the time of year, but nevertheless mainly dry with sunny spells and maybe the occasional light shower.

Starting from Skirethorns Lane, Threshfield our 15 strong group headed up along Grysedale lane and Moor Lane, onto and across heather clad Boss Moor, before descending via Swinden Lane to the village of Cracoe. It was from here the most challenging climb of the day began as we headed upwards along Fell Lane, then more steeply up to the obelisk on Cracoe Fell. This was a good setting for a coffee break and a chance for the weary old walk leader to make contact again with the ‘sprinters’ in the group, who’d had his blessing to stretch their legs on the climb.

The next few miles gave us fine views down into Wharfedale, as we made our way on Land Rover tracks, across Barden Moor, with every now and then grouse bobbing about in the purple heather on either side of us. Did they realise the ‘glorious 12th.’ was only three days away? Our descent from the moor took us past a line of shooting butts to a suitable spot for us to have lunch, before joining the B6160 and a short walk down the road into Burnsall. Here we paused a while to take advantage of the extremely cheap drinks at the kiosk, on the car park by the river.

Moving on once again we followed an attractive section of the Dales Way, alongside the River Wharfe as far as the suspension bridge, where we turned our backs on the River as we climbed steadily up to the village of Hebden and onwards up Hebden Beck to just beyond some old mine workings. Here we turned sharply left up Tinkers Lane where, now high above Hebden, we had our final coffee stop of the day. Still high above the valley our path contoured along Edge Lane, which we followed for a while, before making our way down through fields to Grassington and onwards over the bridge to Threshfield and yet more fields back to our cars on Skirethorns Lane.

Apart from a few spots of rain the day was fine with good spells of sunshine. A happy, cheerful group and a good day for walking.

 Stan.
