Ball Grove, Saturday July 23rd

The weather was just right for walking as the 18 people who had arrived at Ball Grove set off following Colne Water to Laneshaw Bridge where we picked up a section of the Pendle way which we then followed as far as Knarrs Farm. From here, our route took us past Mosside boarding kennels, descending to cross theA6068, and eventually reaching the Pennine Way near Lumb Lane.We were to walk the Pennine Way for a few miles over Ickornshaw Moor with its scattering of cabins, although no-one really knew what they were used for, and, after seeing the trig point on Great Wolf Stones on our right, we commenced the gentle descent to the Trawden to Haworth Road.

Lunch was taken shortly afterwards and the afternoon began with a short climb to the junction of the Pennine Way and the Bronte Way. Turning right, we then followed the Bronte Way towards Wycoller. At times the going was quite difficult due to the high bracken which hid the path and we had to be careful walking though it.Nearing Wycoller we branched off right passing Foster's Leap Farm and continuing through fields to The Atom panopticon, one of four, the others being The Ringing Tree, The Halo and one in Blackburn Town centre. We were really surprised when we reached The Atom to see a bride and groom arrive in an old dormobile to have their photos taken standing by The Atom. They were good enough to have one taken with our group as well - a bit different for their photo album!

After queuing up for ice cream in the cafe at Wycoller we set off on the final 2.5 miles through pasture land and the village of Winewall to arrive back at our cars at just after 4 pm. The weather had been kind to us, not too hot and not too windy, and a good day had been enjoyed by all.
