Ribblehead, Sat May21st

The weather forecast was not promising as 9 people met up at Ribblehead for the start of this walk and as has been the case lately the women outnumbered the men by 2 to 1. We set off up the road to join the Dalesway which we followed fora couple of miles before turning right on the Newby Head road to pick up the Alternative High Level Dalesway. Just before we joined this we saw several Vintage cars on their way down to Dent.

Up to now the weather had been quite good but as westopped for a coffee break the rain came and we donned our waterproofs for the section under Great Knoutberry which has superb panoramic views of all the fells and valleys but unfortunately today we had to imagine them as the rain came down with a vengeance. However, after descending to Dent Station, which is nowhere near Dent village, the rain stopped, the sun put in an appearance, and we had good weather for the rest of the day.

After a pleasant lunch stop on the banks of the River Dee we continued on the Dalesway to Tommy Bridge and on to Dyke Hall Lane and the start of the long slog up the Craven Way. There is a very misleading sign here which states it is 3.75 miles to Ribblehead but in reality it is 6 miles - maybe it was measured before GPS's were around! We had an afternoon stop as the incline diminished and afterwards were treated to some glorious views all around which made up for what we couldn't see in the morning. A long descent followed to Ribblehead where we arrived just after 4.30pm after a walk of 18.5 miles in good company with plenty of chat and laughter along the way.
